20 YEARS OF ORANGE EXCELLENCE: MY UJ JOURNEY

Overview

As the University of Johannesburg (UJ) celebrates its 20th anniversary, I find myself reflecting on how deeply this institution has shaped who I am—both personally and academically. UJ is more than just a university to me. It is a symbol of transformation, unity, and ambition. For two decades, UJ has been a place where diverse cultures meet, ideas collide, and leaders are formed. And I am proud to be a part of that legacy. 

An Educational Institution Associated with Possibilities

I was blown away by the vibrant atmosphere that surrounded the environment. Being surrounded by thousands of students who are all attempting to find their space in the world, just like me, has a certain impact. Every area at UJ has a take to tell, from lecture halls to student protests, community service projects to piece full moments in the library. Those stories are personal. It was frightening for someone from a small village to get used to Johannesburg’s fast-paced culture. However, UJ made the changeover easier than I had anticipated. The university gave me more than simply a place to study, it gave me a place to develop. I was introduced to concepts and individuals that I had never met before. I started asking questions, thinking critically and gradually figuring out who I wanted to be. 

Expanding outside the Classroom

UJ's influence to my development has extended well beyond textbooks and assessments. The educational professionals are sophisticated. Indeed, the professors push you to do better. But it's the "in between" situations that have had the greatest impact on me. During my first year, I engaged a couple of student organisations without realising how important they would be for establishing my trust in others and my interpersonal abilities. Either that involved organising promotions for awareness as well as taking part in leadership development courses, I found myself continually gaining knowledge, often unknowingly.

These circumstances have given me the courage to stand up, lead, and recognise that my point of view is important. The educational institution also promotes entrepreneurial spirit and creativity. Students are being challenged by the opportunity to come forward with practical and significant solutions by conducting initiatives such as the UJ Technopreneur ship Department and the Institute for Business. It's incredibly encouraging to be a part of an environment in which pupils are launching organisations, undertaking research, and supporting efforts to improve society.

A Vision for the Future 

UJ is a university that is deeply connected to the struggles and accomplishments of South African culture; it is not only an inward-looking institution. UJ takes its responsibilities for social development extremely seriously, from assisting impoverished neighborhoods to fostering environmental sustainability. During my time as a student, I had the opportunity to help with a variety of community service projects, such as organizing drives to collect donations, mentoring pupils in high school, along with participating in sanitation activities.

These occurrences taught me to recognise that academic performance entails more than merely meeting personal ambitions. The idea is to lift people up along with yourself. Even when I finish my education, I plan to carry on promoting the Ubuntu values of humankind and interconnectedness.

Aspiration Towards the Next Decades

I have been worrying about what lies ahead as UJ celebrates its twentieth (20th) decade of magnificence. What exactly awaits beyond in the coming two decades? I assume that the university will continue to push the envelope, eliminate unfairness, and produce graduates who are not only clever but also nice and responsible. I hope UJ maintains to be an institution where tough dialogues are encouraged, where students from different walks of life are appreciated and recognized, and additionally where innovation is driven by motivations that go beyond financial gain. Institutions like UJ play an important role in preparing graduates to function as global citizens in the face of rapid changes in society, technological advances, and the environment. I am certain that UJ can complete the duty at being performed.

Concluding Remarks 

UJ@20 is a forceful overview of our journey so far as well as a vision towards the years to come, rather than simply an acknowledgment of the past. It feels incredibly significant to be a part of this organisation at such a crucial time. I'm actively creating and adding to a legacy rather than merely obtaining a credential. I take with me the priceless insights, meaningful relationships, and life-changing events that have shaped me thus far as I continue my adventure at UJ. And I look forward to the additional opportunities that lie ahead.
